Creative Writing

Creative and Performing Arts Pathway — Form 6

Handwriting is a physical skill. Learners must first sit properly, hold the pencil correctly, and then form each letter in the right direction. This lesson begins with a warm-up to strengthen the hand muscles, moves to letter formation, and ends with copying a short word or sentence neatly.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  • Sit correctly at the desk (feet flat, back straight)
  • Hold the pencil with a three-finger tripod grip
  • Form the target letters in the correct direction
  • Write letters at consistent size on the line
  • Copy a short word or sentence neatly

Lesson Activities

  1. Hand warm-up (3 min): Squeeze a small ball, wiggle fingers, ‘walk’ fingers on the desk.
  2. Pencil grip check (2 min): Teacher walks round and corrects grip using ‘pinch and rest’ — thumb and index pinch, middle finger rests.
  3. Letter formation (10 min): Teacher demonstrates one letter (e.g. ‘a’) on the board. Learners trace in the air, then on paper, then write on their own.
  4. Copying (10 min): Learners copy a short word or sentence on lined paper, focusing on neatness.
  5. Neatness check (5 min): Learners review their own work; teacher praises improvement.

Assessment

Check pencil grip and letter shapes. Praise improvement more than perfection. Children who tire quickly should be given shorter tasks. Record progress on the handwriting checklist.

Home Activity

Ask your child to write their name neatly three times at home. Praise them for any improvement.
